Somerhill Gallery Shows Richard Fennell and Laura Murphy Frankstone
New oil on canvas paintings by NC artist Richard Fennell will be on exhibit at Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC, through Sept. 29. Concurrently, in the West Gallery, a Side Show of new paintings by Chapel Hill resident Laura Murphy Frankstone will be featured.
Richard Fennell's work for this exhibit, his fourth solo exhibit at Somerhill Gallery is comprised of a new selection of NC landscape and still life paintings. Artist Fennell captures the changing of the seasons and the evolution of nature as seasonal cycles progress. Using a rich palette of colors suggested by his surroundings and a highly developed brush technique, the artist depicts not only the landscape of NC but also the elements that make it what it is. It is a very personal, light-filled, lush vision.
In the West Gallery the paintings of Laura Murphy Frankstone
are comprised of thought-provoking imagery and complex painterly
techniques. Each work, based on realistic subjects challenges
the viewer to look anew at often taken for granted objects. Artist
Frankstone uses a side array of stroke, color and texture in each
work, bestowing upon them deep, resinous texture and shape.
Richard Fennell received his BFA and MFA from the University of
NC at Greensboro. He is the recipient of numerous awards including
purchase awards in the NC Artists Competition and the Northern
Telecom, Inc. sculpture exhibit. He has been a participant in
numerous exhibits including ones at the NC Museum of Art, Weatherspoon
Gallery in Greensboro, NC, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary
Art (SECCA) in Winston-Salem, NC, the St. John's Museum of Fine
Art in Wilmington, NC, and the Fayetteville Museum of Art, Fayetteville,
NC.
His work is in numerous collections including the NC Museum of Art, The NC Bar Association, Phillip Morris Co., R.J. Reynolds, Central Carolina Bank, Dillard Paper Co., Miller Breweries Corp., Duke University, the University of NC, and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, Montgomery, AL.
This is Fennell's fifth feature exhibit at Somerhill Gallery. Previously he exhibited in one-person exhibitions in 1996, 1993, 1990 and a two-person exhibit with Roy Nydorf in 1987.
Laura Murphy Frankstone is a Chapel Hill resident. This West Gallery Side Show marks her premier exhibit at Somerhill gallery and her return to painting after a hiatus from the medium.
