Michael Joerling
Using a variety of domestic and environmentally conscious exotic woods, Michael Joerling crafts elegant one-of-a-kind studio furniture works. Each piece, be it a functional bench, or a pure sculpture work is a detailed expression of the beauty of material, self expression of ideas and the emotional attachment Michael Joerling possesses to each work.
Joerling is a native of Cincinnati, OH and a NC resident. He is a past recipient of a Fine Arts Scholarship to Georgetown College and has studied at the Haystack School of Arts & Crafts, where he also was a teaching assistant. He recently completed his second teaching assignment at NC's Penland School of Crafts.
Joerling is a 1994 recipient of a NC Arts Council Visual Arts Fellowship and was a finalist for the 1993 NC Museum of Art Triennial Exhibit of that year.
Joerling's work has been featured in Celebrating the Creative Spirit:Contemporary Southeastern Furniture, touring six museums of the Southeast, 1998; Presenter's Show, Spotlight '97 at the American Craft Council Southeastern Conference, 1997; The Designed Object at the Duke University Museum of Art, 1996; Eight NC Furniture Makers at the Greenhill Center, Greensboro, NC, 1995; Spotlight 94, the American Craft Council's Southeastern Regional Exhibit, 1994; New Furniture, at the Visual Arts Center, NC State University, 1994; and a one-person exhibit in 1994 at the Durham Arts Council, Durham, NC.
In 1998, Michael Joerling was featured in Creating a Theatre of Art in Decor Magazine, he was the featured artist in the Portfolio section of American Craft Magazine in 1995, and 1992 he was a featured artist in North Carolina Home Magazine.
This is Michael Joerling's second feature exhibit at Somerhill Gallery. He has been previously featured in a 1996 exhibit with artist Carol Bechtel and has been a participant in several group exhibits.
Eric Lawing's expressionist, textured paintings explore figurative, recognizable subjects, With strong contrast and energetic application of paint to form a richly textured surface, artist Lawing captures the essential elements of figurative subjects through abstract techniques. A sense of "objectness" is often given to the works by mounting the paper-borne art on wood panel. Frequently, the artist progresses through a series of works of a given image with each altered in some way from the previous.
Lawing received his BA from the University of NC-Wilmington and continued his studies at the University of NC-Greensboro where he received his MFA.
Lawing has been a participant in numerous one-person and group exhibits including: ones at the St. John's Museum of Art in Wilmington, NC; The NC Artists Exhibition at the NC Museum of Art, 1996; the 24th Competition for NC Artists at the Fayetteville Museum of Art, 1996; the 1995 Art on Paper exhibit at the University of NC-Greensboro; a one-person exhibit at the Durham Arts Council in 1996; Black and Light, a three-person exhibit at the St. John's Museum, Wilmington,NC; and the Texas National at Stephen F. Austin University, 1995.
Represented at Somerhill Gallery for 5 years, this is Lawing's second South Gallery feature exhibit. Previously, he has been a participant in a two-person exhibit with artist Richard Stenhouse in 1997 and numerous group exhibits.
