Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill Features Two New Exhibits

New oil on canvas paintings by NC native Frank Faulkner will be on exhibit at Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC through Nov. 20. Concurrently, in the West Gallery, a Side Show of new paintings by Barry Roal Carlsen will be featured.

Frank Faulkner

Faulkner's work for this exhibit, his first one-person exhibit at Somerhill Gallery, is comprised of a new selection of abstract paintings on both canvas and panel. Artist Faulkner, using a rich palette of colors, often metallic in character, and highly developed textures on the surfaces, creates rich, complex paintings. Often recognizable imagery wind their way into the serpentine-textured, multi-layered works.

Frank Faulkner received his BFA and MFA from the University of NC at Chapel Hill. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the NC Arts Council Award, a SECCA National Endowment Grant, and an individual Artists Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

He has exhibited widely in both one-person and group exhibits. Included are ones at the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, NY; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; Associated American Artists, NY, NY; the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC; the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, NC; and the Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, SC.

Barry Roal Carlsen

Opening concurrently is a West Gallery Side Show for American artist Barry Roal Carlsen. Taking inspiration from the landscape surrounding his Wisconsin home, Carlsen creates works one step beyond a visual diary. According to Carlsen, "The places I visit in my paintings are reconstructions of another time. They are amalgamations, the kind of blending or restructuring of place that our memories recall for us... the paintings are emotional vignettes, rather than just formal landscapes."

Carlsen is a recipient of numerous awards and has exhibited widely throughout the US. Recent exhibits include ones at the Wisconsin Academy of Arts and Sciences, Madison, Wl; the Sioux City Art Center, Sioux City, IA; the Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, Nebraska; and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

This is Carlsen's first one-person exhibit at Somerhill Gallery. Previously he was a participant in numerous group exhibits.
