Summer House Gallery Reopens

Summer House Gallery in Highlands, NC, is pleased to announce its reopening after extensive renovation. Now, in addition to the high quality fine art and craftwork from regional and national artists, the Gallery is a showroom for Maitland-Smith furniture and accessories. These hand-crafted home furnishings, renowned for their superb design and fine craftsmanship, reflect the devotion, skill and creativity of the master craftsmen, artisans, and traders of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

Maitland-Smith's fine products are handmade by expert craftsmen in its own factories and by artisans throughout the world. These pieces are handmade to the exacting standards established by masters such as Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite, and Thomas Sheraton, leaders of the Golden Age of English furniture.

Maitland-Smith's artisans use only the finest natural materials, blended in creative combinations and time honored construction techniques. Each Maitland-Smith item, from urns to upholstery, exemplifies the company's commitment to excellence with each item as a singular work of art, produced in a variety of styles, finishes, and exotic woods, each capturing the essence of aesthetic purity.

In addition to the Maitland-Smith furnishings, Summer House Gallery also has genuine antiques, from a 200 year old American pie safe with hand-embossed metal doors to ancient Chinese wall panels and furniture. The Gallery's fine art extends from 19th century oils and watercolors to contemporary work in different media, including photography. There is a Folk Art section which features everything from paintings to hooked rugs and hand-woven baskets.

The very beautiful grounds are located 2 miles out from Highlands' Main Street on the Georgia Road (NC Hwy 106). The lovely Gallery building is surrounded by trees and rhododendrons, with a porch and nearby rock garden for sitting and taking in the peacefulness of the mountains.

Adjacent to the Gallery is The Summer House itself, full of equally beautiful home furnishings and accessories. There are Kitchen and Bath, as well as Interior Design Departments to assist people in choosing what's best for their own lovely mountain homes. Tiger Mountain Woodworks, the custom furniture workshop on the grounds, will also make individual pieces of furniture, as well as curtain valances and rustic mirrors, to any desired size or finish. There are hickory bunk beds, beautifully detailed cabinets and entertainment centers, as well as elegant dining tables crafted from 200 year old heart pine wood.

At The Summer House, as well as Summer House Gallery, there are old things, new things made from old materials, and new things contemporary in every way.
