Theatre Art Galleries Offer Three Exhibits for the End of Summer
Theatre Art Galleries, Inc. (TAG), located in High Point, NC, is pleased to announce the opening of three solo exhibitions of recent works by Martha Matthews, Beth McLean, and Susan Fecho. These three exhibitions will be on view from Aug. 19 through Oct. 7.
Martha Matthews: Fiber Images is exhibited in TAG's Main Gallery. Beth McLean: Lowcountry/Highcountry is exhibited in Gallery B. And, Susan Fecho: Point of Departure is exhibited in Gallery C.
Matthews of Greenville, NC, was trained as a painter but found that working with fiber was closer to her heart. She is exhibiting some of her large, elaborate tapestries, which had been her favored medium for the past fifteen years. More recently she has been producing what she calls "drawings with the sewing machine". These small, intimate pieces are spontaneously created with thread on linen as the artist uses the needle of her sewing machine to "draw" the image, layering colors to achieve a lush effect. Both her tapestries and the drawings have a tactile beauty and an intricate presence.
Though now residing in Greenville, Matthews was a long time resident of Charlotte, NC. She received her BA in Art History and Painting from Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, VA, and studied at the Art Students League in New York City. Her most recent exhibition was at the Greenville Museum of Art in Greenville, NC. Her tapestries are displayed in many corporate and public buildings including: Covenant Presbyterian Church, Charlotte; Mobay Corporation, Pittsburgh, PA; Southern National Bank, Lumberton, NC; Wachovia Bank & Trust, Greenville and Charlotte, NC; The Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC; and IBM, Danbury, CT.
Matthews is active in several craft organizations. Currently, she is NC representative to the Southeastern Region of the American Craft Council, and for many years was an active board member of Piedmont Craftsmen.
Beth McLean of Sullivans Island, SC, is an oil painter who is exhibiting landscapes of her home in Charleston's atmospheric Lowcountry; and through her travels to the southwest, also depicts mountainous desert vistas of that unique highcountry. Her impressionistic style captures the rich colors of the land and the ocean. Her paintings vary from quiet scenes of children picking up shells on the beach, to fiery dramatic sunsets and hopeful glowing sunrises.
McLean received a BA from UNC Wilmington, Wilmington, NC, and a BS from the Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale, FL. She has continued her art studies at the Scottsdale Artists School in Arizona and the Gibbes Museum School in Charleston.
McLean has exhibited at the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Exhibition and the Unity Gallery in Charleston and is a member of the Charleston Artist Guild.
Susan Fecho of Tarboro, NC, was originally trained in printmaking and surface design. With this foundation, she has integrated the use of computer generated and manipulated images to bring together her works of historical and personal symbolism. These images are comprised of drawings, photos, and diagrams of natural, personal and architectural elements. Whether computer synthesis or layered collage, the effect is translucent but textural. Paint is then added to these mixed media pieces to enhance the surface.
Fecho is a professor at Barton College, Wilson, NC. She earned her MFA and BFA from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, and has studied at Penland School of crafts, Penland, NC, Jan Eyck Academy in Holland, the University of London, and Hombodlt Scientific Institute in Maine.
Fecho has exhibited at NC Wesleyan College, Rocky Mount; Wilson Cultural Center, and the Eagle Gallery in Raleigh.
