January Issue 2000
Prints by Ann Conner at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC
Woods: Relief Prints by Ann Conner opens Jan. 10 and continues through Feb. 4 in Rutledge
Gallery on the campus of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC.
Artist Ann Conner (American, born 1948) opens Winthrop University
Galleries' new year with images from five different series of
her contemporary woodcut prints. Hand-printed, limited edition
prints included in the exhibition range in size from 46 x 34 inches
to 9 x 7 inches. Conner's work displays her thoughtful use of
the wood surface as a powerful visual element. Colorful relief
printing of natural wood grain is typically juxtaposed by perfectly
positioned man-made forms and outlines. "The visual result
is intelligent, thought provoking, and classically beautiful,"
says Winthrop Gallery director Tom Stanley.
Conner has exhibited her work internationally and has been included in the anthology The Best of Printmaking.
