Artists' Guild of Spartanburg (SC) Features Works by Dom Ferullo and Patricia Cole-Ferullo

The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg will present the exhibit, New Works 2009 - 2010, by Dom Ferullo and Patricia Cole-Ferullo, on view from Jan. 4 - 28, 2010, at the Guild Gallery at the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, SC.

Dom Ferullo

The artists work primarily in mixed media on canvas and board, but Dom Ferullo also creates abstract collage, as well as, free-standing and wall-hung wood sculpture.

One of the sculptures, Encroachment, a floor sculpture of mixed wood construction, conveys the artist's strong feelings about the destruction of natural resources and land as cities continue to grow and encroach on the natural world, a prevailing theme in his work.

"In this piece, I attempt to convey to the viewer, through abstraction, my view of the future," Dom Ferullo says of his depiction of the waste of natural resources in the pursuit of growth and money.

In the painstaking creative process, each small piece of black wood was cut, sanded, painted, then sanded and painted again before being assembled on the large blocks of natural cherry, maple or other found pieces that make up the base.

"My inspiration comes from nature. The colors, shapes, intricate lines, light, and compositions of perfect proportion all guide me and inspire my work. My happiness comes from sharing this vision with others," Dom Ferullo says of his abstract wood sculpture as well as his collage/mixed media pieces.

Patricia Cole-Ferullo

Patricia Cole-Ferullo's mixed water media on canvas or board is in the Abstract Expressionist-Experimental mode. She developed a love for and a strong connection to the sea, sand, and all of nature while living in Florida and the south of Italy. That affinity is evident in Sky Markers, a water media, pen, pencil work on stretched canvas, the final painting in a series based on her research into Sacred Geometry.

The painting was produced through a process incorporating a series of multi-layers with poured dyes, acrylics and random markings, "adding and removing to reveal hidden passages underneath until a satisfying degree of mystery and impact was achieved," Patricia Cole-Ferullo explains.

The imagery in the piece represents the position of the stars in the big dipper relative to the North Star in the time of the rise of the constellation Aquarius. Prominent in the piece is the ancient symbol for Aquarius, the water-bearer, which is associated with the re-birth of consciousness.

"As with most of my painting, the progression is from order to chaos and back to order, revealing clues to the process in the final painting," the artist says of the Sacred Geometry series.

Both artists have won top awards in national and international competitions and have works in private and corporate collections in this country and abroad. Dom is represented by MYST Gallery in Spartanburg and Patricia by the Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, and MYST Gallery.

The artists now make their home in Tryon, NC, after having lived and studied extensively both in this country and abroad.

After returning to Tryon in December of 2007, Pat resumed teaching classes in experimental water media at the Tryon Fine Arts Center and in her private studio and teaching Abstract Expressionist Painting and Introduction to Watercolor at Isothermal Community College in Columbus, NC. Dom also teaches classes and workshops in Collage/Mixed Media at the Tryon Fine Arts Center and in Collage/Mixed Media at Isothermal Community College in Columbus.
