The Wells Gallery at The Sanctuary Resort on Kiawah Island, SC, Offers Works by Karen Larson Turner, Glenn Harrington, and George Pate

The Wells Gallery at The Sanctuary Resort on Kiawah Island, SC, will present an exhibit of works by Karen Larson Turner, Glenn Harrington, and George Pate, on view from Nov. 1 - 30, 2013.

For Karen Larson Turner, becoming an artist was the natural continuation of her favorite childhood pastime. Her earliest memories include hours spent on the floor with a sketchbook, producing countless drawings from her imagination. Later, she discovered the joy of drawing and painting from life.

Turner graduated from Calvin College in 1991 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. In 1992, her love for the craftsmanship of traditional oil painting inspired her to further study at the School of Representational Art in Chicago, IL. Modeled after the 19th century Atelier system, SORA provides mentorship of three master painters for students embarking upon rigorous study of classical technique. Upon graduating, Turner began her career as a professional artist. She is most well known for her four murals, measuring 28 x 22 feet, that grace the grand staircases of The Sanctuary Resort. Her current works are now available through the Wells Gallery.

Glenn Harrington, accomplished fine artist and illustrator, is noted for his exquisite, enigmatic portraits of young children but is also internationally known for his paintings of the sport of golf.

In 1981, Harrington graduated from Pratt Institute in New York City and quickly began his career in illustration and painting. His works have been featured in American Arts Quarterly, American Art Collector and Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, as well as appearing on the covers of American Artist, US Art Magazine and in the New York Times. Harrington’s portrait painting has received the Portrait Society of America’s Draper Grand Prize in 2007, Honor Award in 2008 and 2005, and Certificate Awards in 2013, 2009 and 2004. Recent portrait commissions include President George W. Bush, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Phil Mickleson and Fred Couples for the World Golf Hall of Fame, and 2013 inductee Ray Floyd for Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament (with thirty of his oil paintings highlighting the career of Jack Nicklaus purchased by the Jack Nicklaus Museum).

In 2010 Harrington won American Art Collector Magazine’s Editor’s Choice Award in an exhibition organized by the International Guild of Realism. He has been a consistent finalist at both the Art Renewal Center’s annual juried show and the national annual exhibitions of the Oil Painters of America.

George Pate was a resident of the Southeast since 1957, and Santa Fe, NM, since 1977, where he found ample subject matter in his imminently paintable landscape, filled with historical architecture and manifestations of distinctly different cultures. This intrigue motivated him to move to Beaufort, SC, and become a full time resident of the Lowcountry. Using his Southwestern influenced color palette, Pate now embraces the light and colors that the Lowcountry has to offer.

Pate works en plein air to render light, shade, and shadow with a strong design, vital color and thoughtful brush strokes. He evokes both realism and impressionism in his canvases and consistently displays his understanding of the invention and the presence of emotion. He fully inhabits each landscape he paints, extracting the essence that resides in the soul of the land, and releasing its poetry onto the surface of his canvas.

Professional organizations have recognized Pate with shows, purchases, and awards, and his work is represented in both private and corporate collections. He is a member of the Salamagundi Club in New York, a Signature Member of Oil Painters of America (OPA), a member of Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters (RMPAP), and Watercolor West.

We will host a live painting event with Karen Larson Turner on Nov. 7, 8, and 9. The artist will be in attendance, painting in the gallery, and around The Sanctuary Resort (event is open to the public at no charge).
