Woolworth Walk in Asheville, NC, Features Works by David Pope and Cindy Trisler

Woolworth Walk in Asheville, NC, will present the exhibit, Art from Nature, featuring paintings by David Pope and pottery by Cindy Trisler, on view in the FW Front Gallery, from Apr. 1 - 29, 2013. A reception will be held on Apr. 5, from 5-7pm.

Born and raised closer to the briars and brambles of Tennessee Farmland than to the bourgeois city fine arts, David Pope always appreciated the subtleties of nature. Once he discovered the arts, he felt drawn to combine the two worlds and create art on his own terms. Pope is a mixed media painter using acrylics, oils, encaustics, paper, and graphite. In approaching his recent work, rather than allow himself to feel inhibited by line and order, he engages each piece with a free flow of emotion to produce interpretive and expressive works.

Pope is drawn to weathered surfaces altered by nature’s corrosion and appreciates the challenge of reflecting what he calls visual acoustics. He is captivated by how the elements, overtime, alter things into an expression of life by decay and ruin, and how color and light have the capacity to alter our mood in a subtle and natural way.

Cindy Trisler works with dirt, in her studio making pottery and in her garden growing flowers and vegetables for her family and local markets. Her pots are inspired by time in the garden and by her love of the mountains. Trisler’s work is mostly functional, designed and priced to be used and enjoyed. Her work includes a wide variety of glaze colors, clay types, and techniques, everything from high fire reduction and salt/soda, to low fire electric. It’s about half hand-built and half wheel-thrown.

Trisler uses sgrafitto and sculpting to enhance her pots. She embraces the words “colorful” and “whimsical” as descriptions of her pottery. Trisler believes in the magic of the mundane and the beauty of the natural world and is happy when she can capture a glimpse of that magic in her pots and share it with others.
