October Issue 2009

Charlotte Art League in Charlotte, NC, Features Exhibit Focused on Visually Impaired

The Charlotte Art League (CAL) is joining more than 200 venues worldwide this October to bring visual arts to the blind and visually impaired. Art Beyond Sight 2009 will exhibit artwork created by regional sighted and visually impaired artists during the month-long show, which opens Oct. 2 and continues through Oct. 30, 2009, at CAL in Charlotte, NC.

The exhibited works will be tactile and multi-sensory, created specifically for the blind and visually impaired to actively explore. Much of the exhibited works will be created by students participating in CAL's art classes for the visually impaired. These classes, which are part of CAL's Outreach Program, are in collaboration with The Metrolina Association for the Blind, who provides the students to give the visually impaired an opportunity to experience and create art. These students work with paint, clay, mosaics, fabric and paper mache for a full art experience.

CAL's October exhibit is part of the Art Beyond Sight Collaborative's worldwide Awareness Month, an annual series of special exhibits, demonstrations, online discussion groups, and conferences at museums, schools and cultural institutions. The goals of Awareness Month are to raise awareness of issues concerning the blind and visually impaired and to bring together professionals, educators, researchers, slighted and blind artists, and art lovers throughout the world. Art Beyond Sight is coordinated by Art Education for the Blind, a non-profit organization based in New York City, dedicated to making art and visual culture accessible to the blind and visually impaired.

Visitors to the exhibit at CAL will be asked to "touch the art' and share in the sensory experience of visual art.
