Art in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Ed Trask

Cave Fine Art in Raleigh, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Richmond
to Raleigh: Wires to Rails, featuring works by Ed Trask, on
view through Oct. 20, 2009.
Kaleidoscope skies battle
with past history in Ed Trask's dynamic landscapes in the exhibit
of his new work, Richmond to Raleigh: Wires to Rails.
Some of his recognizable landmarks demand reflection; others remind
us of similar scenes in our own personal histories.
Beneath Trask's bold, rhythmic brush strokes hover almost forgotten
themes of preservation, spirituality, and social equity. He looks
to a kind of lost past for inspiration where the original use
of a building or road is gone, progress devoid of preservation.
This occurs in a painting of the now defunct, facade of the Capitol
Tire Co. in downtown Raleigh or his upward view of an old railroad
trestle with a train of freight cars rolling by, complete with
appropriate graffiti written by hoboes as messages to the next
occupants.
Behind every painting is a story for Trask. As a punk rock drummer
with Avail and other bands, he toured the world sketching the
views he observed from the bus. Hence, the numerous occasional
breaks for utility poles in his traveling scenes, many reminiscent
of family car trips we all took as children. Trask, himself, has
moved into the family realm with two children, a wife, and a bicycle,
devoting most of his career time to his art.
Of course, this is a natural transition for a diverse guy like
Trask who has an art degree from VCU in Richmond, VA. He
has been covering that city's walls with huge murals for years,
with or without permission. Richmond's industrial district, built
at the turn of the last century continues to be a wealth of subject
material for the artist although, in this show, he also explores
old urban Raleigh, NC, and lots of back roads in between.
