Lowcountry Artists Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Rick Dean, Lynda English, and Jackie Wukela

Lowcountry Artists Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Out of Africa, featuring works by Rick Dean, Lynda English, and Jackie Wukela, on view from Oct.  1 - 31, 2009.

"Safari" in Swahili means "journey" and the journey Rick Dean took to Africa in the summer of 2008 changed his life. He and his traveling companions, family and friends, spent the first part of the trip by giving back-five days helping families and children at Living Water Children's Centre - a home for orphaned children. Dean's group had raised almost $16,000 through an Oprah style "Big Give", to take to this centre that had so little.  Many of his images are from this orphanage and this part of Tanzania.

Next the group traveled to Kenya where the Maasai Mara comes alive during the Great Migration of the wildebeest and then to lions, cheetah, elephant and rhino. Lastly to Rwanda where they spent two days trekking to see the Mountain Gorilla.

It took an entire year for Dean to organize the thousands of shots taken during this wonderous adventure. He now brings it together in a most unique presentation. Lynda English and Jackie Wukela, fellow members at Lowcountry Artist Gallery, have worked with the photographer to use certain of his images as inspiration for paintings and drawings of their own. It is quite unusual to see artists sharing source material in this way. Viewers may see the same images is photographs, paintings, and drawings.

Jackie Wukela

"Who would ever think we would get to use these wonderful photographs. I want to paint them again and again", says Jackie Wukela. And she does, more than once and in different media.  And they all look different. Wukela's work in watercolor, colored pencil and oil centers around the Maasai. "Their faces, figures and clothing are the stuff of drama.  Subjects don't get better than that."

Lynda English

While Lynda English paints figures as well, she also includes peaceful long-formatted herds grazing on the plain in her selections. Very much mood pieces, these acrylic paintings give the viewer a feeling of still untouched beauty.
