RedSky Gallery
in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Dimeji Onafuwa
RedSky Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibit, Dimeji Onafuwa: The Significant Line, on view from Oct. 9 through Nov. 12, 2009.
RedSky Gallery is pleased
to present work by Dimeji Onafuwa, a Nigerian born artist living
in Charlotte, who succeeds in cultivating evocative and emotional
scenes of assimilation that are at once hauntingly familiar and
intimately worldly. His bold use of color creates a luminous quality
of melancholia, allowing the viewer a powerful sense of the human
condition.
Influences of Fauvism and 60s Bay Area figurative, as well as
concepts from the Yoruba language are drawn on and expressed.
A few examples are Ona, meaning embellishment of form; Ara, creativity,
Era, improvisation and Pipe, equaling completeness. Adding to
his native Nigeria and new home, Charlotte, Onafuwa has also exhibited
his art in Athens, West Virginia and Winston-Salem, NC. He is
currently the president and creative director of Casajulie Visual
Communications, a branding firm.
"I am currently exploring line as a means of connection: connection between God and man, and in interpersonal relationships," says Onafuwa. "The implied line represents the Spirit or the supernatural. The broken line signifies separation. Lines are intriguing. They can be created with fields of color or value or they can be created by command. They can serve as means of beautification and/or identifications (e.g. African tribal scars) and can be simplified to represent intricate details (e.g. Japanese scroll art). Lines can be emphasized to create form, or stripped down to suggest closure."
RedSky Gallery features original works on paper and canvas, sculpture, ceramic, glass, studio furniture, art-to-wear, jewelry, and more. Over 500 regional and national artists are represented at three gallery locations in Dilworth, Blakeney Town Centre in South Charlotte and the EpiCentre in Uptown.
