UNC-Charlotte
in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Sharon Dowell
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibit, Pendulum: Recent Works by Sharon Dowell, on view in the Student Union Gallery, located in the new Student Union, on view from Oct. 5 - 30, 2010.
Dowell captures the
energy of place, the economic boom and downturn, and explores
the theme of man vs. nature. She is interested in the documentation
of memory and strives to find beauty in often overlooked structures
and spaces. She incorporate the energy, the tension, and the emotions
felt in the environment, from the instant when her feet were planted
on the street, in a field, or on the edge of a balcony. At times,
commentaries on the changing environment and political or social
references surface in the work.
Pendulum includes several works inspired from her recent
residency in Iceland, depicting projects that are stalled, abandoned,
or previously stalled due to the Kreppa (Recession) there. "We
are in the bottom of the valley" was a common phrase she
encountered, meaning that they are now coming back up, or the
pendulum is swinging back.
Former Director of Center of the Earth Gallery, Dowell resides in Charlotte. She received her BFA from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and has work in major collections such as the Ritz Carlton, Duke Energy, Fidelity Investments, and The Federal Reserve Bank. Recent shows include the Friends of the Arts auction at Christies New York and Duke University. An Arts and Science Council grant recipient, Dowell recently completed a public mural on Central Avenue for the City of Charlotte. She is currently working on commissions for the CATS Transit light rail and Durham's Bull City Connector bus line. Dowell independently curates, guest juries, and exhibits regularly in galleries in Seattle, New York, Atlanta, Raleigh, Memphis, and Charlotte.
