Aiken Artist Guild in Aiken, SC, Features Works by Barbara Yon

The Aiken Artist Guild is presenting a solo exhibit by award winning South Carolina artist, Barbara Yon, on view at the Hitchcock Health Center in Aiken, SC, through Oct. 31, 2011.

Yon is a native of Anderson, SC, now residing in Ridge Spring, SC. After teaching school for twenty years she began to pursue her interest in art. She works in water media in conjunction with collage and many other painting paraphernalia. The artist enjoys experimenting with the media.

Yon is a member of the Anderson Artist Guild, Aiken Artist Guild, Art Association of Ridge Spring and the South Carolina Watermedia Society. She is the recipient of numerous awards at the state and national levels, and has been included in the South Carolina Watermedia Society’s Traveling Show for two years. Yon also has been guest artist at the Pearl Gallery in Portland, OR, The Footlight Players Theater of Charleston, SC, and the Paper Mill Art Gallery of NJ. Her paintings are part of private and public collections across the nation and abroad.

Yon was selected to decorate a life size horse for the public art project Horseplay in Aiken, a six-foot fish for the public art project, Fish Out of Water-Hooked on the Arts in Anderson, SC, and a 1943 John Deere tractor for the town of Ridge Spring. All these projects were done in mosaics using stained glass.

Yon’s work includes collages made from various Far Eastern papers collected from mission trips to Japan, Taiwan and Indonesia. She bought many native papers and collected postage stamps, store wrappings, washi papers, and many advertisements from the “gomi” (Japanese for trash). After returning home she transformed these papers into unique pieces of art which are include in this show.
