Arboretum in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Leo Monahan
The North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville,
NC, is presenting a special exhibit by paper sculpture artist
Leo Monahan, in the Baker Exhibit Center, on view through Mar.
8, 2009.
With more than 35 years of experience, Monahan has developed his own unique style of paper sculpture but has remained true to the early artistic influences in his life. As a child in the Black Hills of South Dakota, he became fascinated with Native American art and artifacts, wildlife and his environment as he was growing up. These motifs are at the core of his work today.
Monahan received the
first Walt Disney art honor scholarship at Chouinard Art Institute
and has a fine arts education, but is a self-taught paper sculptor.
He creates spontaneous sculptures starting with paper and adding
color with brushes, sponges, airbrush and rubbed in dry pigments.
Monahan's art is made entirely of paper and never has other materials
or objects as part of the collage. His dedication to the art of
paper sculpture has earned him numerous professional accolades
including a life achievement award from the Society of Illustrators
of Los Angeles.
Revealed in Monahan's mastery of this art form is an amazing abstract
use of material combined with strong symbolism, creating emotional
responses and feelings of nostalgia for other times and places.
