Carolina Galleries in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Tom McNickle
Carolina Galleries in Charleston, SC, will feature an exhibition of oils and watercolors by Tom McNickle for the Charleston Fine Art Annual, which begins on Nov. 7, for the kickoff of the event and continues through Dec. 6, 2003.
A native of Western
Pennsylvania, McNickle paints country houses, woodlands, the open
countryside, and most recently, Charleston and the South Carolina
Lowcountry. Favoring a long, narrow format that is particularly
suited to depicting the flat expanse of the land, his small paintings
are done on location but his large watercolors are made in the
studio from sketches, memory, and an occasional photograph.
Although some of McNickle's paintings are very large (measuring
up to 45" x 60") and contain complex foliage and architectural
detail, he works so rapidly that he completes them in one sitting.
The idea of rapid execution is an essential element of the philosophy
of Zen, and is an integral part of his work. Approaching each
painting in a meditative state, McNickle captures the essence
of the Lowcountry by layering direct, spontaneous strokes of color.
McNickle studied at Edinboro State University in Pennsylvania.
He has exhibited in numerous solo shows at such places as the
Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, the Butler Institute
of Art in Youngstown, OH, and Capricorn Gallery in Bethesda, MD.
His work can be found in numerous public and private collections
including the Butler Institute of American Art, Vero Beach Center
for the Arts, Bank of America, and US Airways. McNickle is a member
of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor
Society.
