November Issue 2009

Frame of Mind in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Evelyn Wong

Frame of Mind in Columbia, SC, will present an exhibit of works by Native Columbian, Evelyn Wong, on view from Nov. 5 through Dec. 1, 2009.

Wong works with a variety of media including charcoal, oil, synthetic paper, multi-ply papers, and colored pencil. Her love of nature and ancient Chinese watercolor paintings inspired a series of works which began when she was in her last two years of studying at USC-Columbia, and travelling across the city without a car made it possible to study the natural flora that grew locally. Since then, this group of works has expanded from oil paintings and charcoal drawings to paper art and colored pencil as well.

In addition to her love of nature, Wong has also found a passion in food and cooking which inspired two other sets of works. The first is a whimsical commentary of society's views on food and sex, comparing the similarities between the two. The second set involves beaded jewelry that was inspired by the textures, colors, and shapes of various fruits.

Finally, Wong is currently working on a new series based on past experiences and emotions as a performer of eleven years. Her love and fear of being on-stage, off-stage, a singer and a member of the audience became the muse for this new and much darker set of works.
