Providence Gallery
in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Harriet Marshall Goode
Providence Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting a solo exhibition, Innermost Thoughts, of figurative paintings by Harriet Marshall Goode, on view from Nov. 6 - 30, 2009.
Goode's wonderfully expressive compositions of women have won top awards in juried competitions across the country for over two decades. She has received numerous distinguished honors and awards in recognition of her work. These include, The Medal of Honor in the Arts, presented by Winthrop University, Career Achievement Award, bestowed by Converse College, Keepers of the Culture Award, presented by the Museum of York County, and an Honorary BFA degree from Winthrop University.
Goode's work is in the
permanent collections of The South Carolina State Museum, the
Museum of York County, and the Arts Council of York County. Her
paintings also reside in private and corporate collections throughout
the United States, Europe, China and Mexico.
A writer as well as painter, each of Goode's paintings is based
on a verse written by the artist. These verses describe the emotional
state of each figure. The titles of Harriet's works such as, She
Ignored All the Rules and Her Thoughts Were Suspended give
the viewer a glimpse into the artist's mind and the message she
is conveying through her art. Her synergetic use of literary and
visual elements allows Goode to liken each canvas to "a stage
where I produce little dramas or short stories." Goode purposely
creates figures that are vague and mysterious. The artist explains
that she does this in order to encourage viewers to finish each
story for themselves, adding details from their own life experience.
