Shain Gallery
in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Kim Schuessler and Terry DeLapp
Shain Gallery in Charlotte,
NC, will present an exhibit of new works by Kim Schuessler and
Terry DeLapp, on view from Nov. 1 - 30, 2009. These artists offer
a contrast of paintings from joyously kooky mixed media pieces
to neo-tonalist landscapes.
Kim Schuessler
Kim Schuessler's paintings are blissfully whimsical. Figures that recall the flapper-era, images sport about in the sunshine and under umbrellas, strolling and dancing with abandon. Silly little cars stare at the viewer like jelly beans with eyes, and furniture assumes comfortable personalities. To the casual eyes, these works have a child-like quality that might tempt those with really gifted children to strip their refrigerators and hang offspring art throughout the house. Of course, Schuessler's paintings are much more than child-like patterns. Along with sunny colors and coltish anatomical exaggerations, she employs scribbled words as information and as non-verbal decorative elements. Her work offers the delectable quality of a dessert concoction.
Schuessler's lighthearted images come with a serious art background. Educated at the University of Georgia and Parsons School of Design in New York, she has honed her fun-loving craft. She also spent time studying with Dan Connally in Cortona, Italy and at the University of Bourgogne in Dijon, France. Schuessler has over 25 exhibitions to her credit including several sell-out shows in collaboration with retail giant Neiman Marcus, the most recent of those collaborations here in Charlotte being held at the Southpark Neiman Marcus store on Nov. 17, 2009, from 6 - 8pm.
Terry DeLapp
Terry DeLapp's focus
on the environment, most specifically the Central Coast of California
where he lives has become a theme of his work. He relies on painterly
achievement to best convey his concern for the land and what is
on it. DeLapp is primarily a landscape painter and is stylistically
Neo-Tonalist. He works within a confine of classic composition
and limited palette using acrylic in the manner of oil paint -
glazing, scumbling, building textures, all in a traditional way
in an attempt to expand those disciplines to further artistic
growth. His work is accessible and simplistic.
DeLapp was born in Pasadena and studied at the Chouinards Art
Academy in Hollywood and at the University of California. He has
been exhibiting his paintings and participating in shows across
the country since the early 1980's. DeLapp has had numerous solo
exhibitions, most recently at the Bakersfield Museum of Art. His
paintings can be found at the San Diego Museum of Art, and in
many private collections, including those of Steve Martin, Martin
Mull, Joan Rivers, Julian Ganz and Robert Zemeckis.
Located in beautiful Myers Park, Shain Gallery has been on the forefront of the North Carolina art scene since 1998. The gallery represents many leading national and regional artists, and recently won the "Best of the Best Award" for best Charlotte gallery.
