University in Winston-Salem, NC, Offers New Exhibitions - One
at Reynolda House Museum of American Art
Wake Forest University
in Winston-Salem, NC, is offering several new exhibits including:
Accidental Mysteries: Extraordinary Vernacular Photographs,
featuring more than 65 snapshot photographs assembled by folk
art collectors John and Teenuh Foster, and New Acquisitions
to the Student Union Collection of Contemporary Art, both
on view in the Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery, through
Dec. 9, 2009.
Accidental Mysteries features found photographs collected
by the Fosters from trips to antique shops and flea markets and
through other means. Found photographs have been recognized
in recent years as works of art in published monographs and museum
exhibitions, although they often were originally made as a record
of family events.
In the exhibit, many photographs will be shown in their original snapshot format. Some of the images will be presented as large-format inkjet prints.
The exhibit, New Acquisitions to the Student Union Collection of Contemporary Art, is composed of new works of art acquired last spring during a New York City buying trip by students and faculty. Every four years, such a group goes to New York City during Spring Break to visit galleries and select works for the Student Union collection, established in 1962.
The exhibit will feature newly-acquired artworks created by five artists: Christian Marclay, Corin Hewitt, Jonas Wood, Yinka Shonibare and Emily Jacir. Eventually, they will join other Student Union Collection pieces on display in Benson University Center, Reynolda Hall and the Scales Fine Arts Center. Pieces of the collection are on display also on Davis Field, adjacent to the Scales Fine Arts Center.
The entire Student Union Collection includes paintings, prints, drawings, photography and sculpture. It features more than 160 pieces by more than 100 artists.
The New Acquisitions exhibit is being presented in conjunction with two other exhibits locally. Reynolda House Museum of American Art will present an exhibit called, Now/Then: A Journey in Collecting Contemporary Art at Wake Forest University. Also featuring Student Union Collection pieces, it will be on view through Dec. 31, 2009. The Reynolda House Museum is located at 2250 Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem.
The other exhibit will be at START, the Wake Forest Student Gallery at Reynolda Village. It is called, 2009: New Work in the WFU Student Art Collection, and will feature art created by Wake Forest students. The exhibit will be on view through Dec. 5, 2009.
