University in Cullowhee, NC, Offers Student Art Exhibit
Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Pareidolia, a senior exhibition featuring the work of nine Western Carolina University art students, on view in the Fine Art Museum at the Fine and Performing Arts Center through Nov. 7, 2009.
The exhibition will include several works by each artist. "The lively mix of drawing, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture will demonstrate a unique investigation of each student's chosen medium/media," said Marya Roland, WCU art professor.
The students are part of Roland's senior portfolio class, which prepares students for entry into the professional art world.
"'Pareidolia,' a psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus (often an image or sound) perceived as significant, is an appropriate title because the essence of creative energy is difficult to define, yet its artistic results are often meaningful," Roland said. "We hope everyone will come to see how these seniors have developed their creativity."

Exhibiting students are Ashlyn Bristle, painting; Justin Cox, painting; Kelly Carstensen, printmaking; Jessica Hauser, photography; Vanessa Lange, painting; Melissa Mills, photography; Aaron Shufelt, sculpture; Thomas Smith, painting; and Maria Thomas, drawing.
