Judy Crane
Although Judy Crane grew up in the West and has painted in many parts of the world, she has always been moved by the Southern landscape and its diversity. Over the years she has found that her en plein air work (a French expression meaning "in the open air," used to describe the act of painting outdoors) and her small studies best captured the essence of the scene. Crane's personal challenge for this exhibition was to create small paintings, mostly done on location, which could then be translated into large studio pieces that maintained a certain essence of sight.
A second goal was to
be as passionate in her process about the large paintings as the
small immediate works. Crane believes that while creating work
for this show her work and style evolved. The earliest plein
air paintings in the exhibition were done entirely with brush,
but Crane's interest in texture began to express itself in later
works. As the body of work evolved, Crane began using the palette
knife more, in both the small plein air paintings and the
larger studio works. The overall exhibition shows the development
of paintings from "sight to studio," as well as the
development of the artist in the process.
Crane, originally from California is a graduate of the University
of California. She has painted professionally for over 30 years
and has studied with some of the countries top landscape painters.
Believing that being an artist is a life long journey, Crane continues
to study and expand her horizons. She moved to Raleigh, NC, in
1980 and has maintained a working studio at Artspace since 1987.
She is an avid plein air painter, working on location in many
parts of the US as well as several European Countries. She has
participated in numerous solo, curated, and juried exhibitions,
and her paintings are in over thirty corporate collections. Crane
is also a sought after workshop instructor, has made a teaching
DVD, and has served as a juror for several local and regional
shows.
David Eichenberger
David Eichenberger's exhibition presents new work created while he was in-residence at Artspace. During his residency he focused on developing a visual vocabulary and style for his work, in an effort to make his work more recognizable. The focused time of the residency also allowed Eichenberger to expand the scope of his work, gaining exhibition opportunities outside of Raleigh.
Eichenberger earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2001. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions including most recently at Rebus Works, Raleigh, NC; Designbox, Raleigh, NC; Gallery 1988, Los Angeles, CA; AhPeele Gallery, Raleigh, NC; and Wootini, Carrboro, NC.
Howard Sherman
Dark humor has always been Howard Sherman's forte, and with his new work he doesn't disappoint. The artist's unique ability to meld historical references with humor has set him apart. The Houston-based artist's most recent paintings continue to exhibit this ability in an explosive, even bombastic fashion, despite a (somewhat) more economical use of visual noise. An increasingly sophisticated palette and less reliance on illustrative elements mark significant growth in Sherman's work from his days as a syndicated comic strip cartoonist.
Sherman received his BA in Studio Art from the University of Texas, and his MFA from the University of North Texas in Denton. Sherman had his first solo museum exhibition in fall 2008 at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont. His work has been featured in New American Painting (Volume 60 and Volume 72), and was included in a two-year traveling exhibition titled New American Talent, organized by Arthouse at the Jones Center, Austin, TX. In 2008, Sherman completed a three-month residency at the McColl Center for Visual Art, Charlotte, NC.
Casey Porn
Amanda Micheletto
Established in January 2000, the Regional Emerging Artist program provides emerging visual artists with time and space to explore their work in a supportive, thriving, artistic environment. Artspace grants two 6-month residencies per year, twice a year selecting an artist in his or her early professional career from a regional pool of applicants.
From 2005-2008, eight artists took part in this residency program. Seven of these artists are represented in this exhibition: Meredith Brickell, Claire Burdulis, Emily Cash, Marie Cordella, Amanda Micheletto, Casey Porn, and Lorna Wang. On view is the varied work produced by these artists, including paintings, ceramics, weavings, garments, and more.
