The Colleton
Museum in Walterboro, SC, Offers Works by Melissa Gravano
The Colleton Museum in Walterboro, SC, will present the exhibit, Low Country Faces, featuring works by Melissa Gravano, on view from Jan. 4 - 30, 2010.
Gravano, originally from Long Island, NY, has been residing in the South Carolina low country for the past 19 years and specializes in the fine art of portraiture. This exhibition will present her most recent body of work, portraits in pencil, which concentrate on the local youth that she also mentors in art at the Colleton Middle School, as well as other drawings.
"Through my interactions with these young people, I have been intrigued by facets of their personalities as they struggle to find themselves, with all of the energy, anger, uncertainty, sensitivity and hope that is a part of youth. I also want others and the students themselves to see their beauty and their strength," says Gravano.
For over 20 years Gravano has exquisitely rendered her subjects with both remarkable detail and tender insight. In addition to being recognized as a gifted portrait artist, she is also sought after for her expressive commercial work.
Gravano studied at the Cooper Union School of Art in NYC and at Southampton College at Long Island University.
Gravano's work was recently included in the 25th Annual Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition (2009) and the Low Country Juried Art Exhibit (2008).
