Elder Gallery
in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Martha Armstrong
Elder Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the first solo exhibition of paintings in the Southeast by Martha Armstrong, on view from Jan. 8 - 30, 2010.
Armstrong, a Massachusetts artist, has the unique ability to create beauty and excitement from what many would classify as mundane and uninspired subject matter. Paintings created in her studios in Massachusetts and Vermont as well as those from her travels to Europe will be exhibited.
New York City art critic,
Andrew Worth, states, "Again and again, Armstrong takes subjects
that ought to be fatigued - the Mediterranean coast, the sunroom
still life, the Yankee woods - and kicks them, like tired pillows,
into freshness."
Armstrong's paintings have been exhibited in Europe and throughout
the United States. Among her activities she has served as visiting
artist and/or critic at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; American
Academy in Rome, Italy; Dartmouth College; American University;
Western Carolina University; Smith College; Massachusetts College
of Art; Rhode Island School of Design; Chicago Art Institute;
and University of South Carolina. Her work is included in numerous
corporate, private and museum collections.
Armstrong's friend, Stanley Lewis, says "Martha's work is contradictory in many ways. She looks at nature. She stands there and paints with an easel and a big canvas but she comes up with a mix of totally abstract forms plus the conventional looking readable information. She works on a painting, outdoors then indoors, then outdoors again. It isn't a blended mixture. Her method adds to the originality of the finished work."
