University of
South Carolina in Columbia, SC, Offers Installation by Jonathan
Brilliant
The University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, will present the installation, Sticks, Straws, Sleeves and Leaves, by Jonathan Brilliant, on view in the University's McMaster Gallery from Jan. 15 through Feb. 23, 2010.
Brilliant initially became enthralled by the coffee cup while sketching at café tables in Starbucks. After watching customers gather each day to get their loved lattes, Brilliant decided to define the coffee cup as a fetish object. Since that crucial change in perspective, Brilliant has created numerous installations employing everything associated with commercial coffee consumption from stirrers to sugar packets.
In January Brilliant
will create a dynamic and engaging installation reflecting his
interest in the effects of labor, performance, and materials applied
to an exhibition space. This exhibition is part of his cross
country traveling series "Have Sticks Will Travel Tour"
where he will be visiting various galleries to build massive,
suspended sculptures from coffee stirrer sticks.
Brilliant's monumental installations provide a visceral experience
for the viewer, often engaging the audience to consider contemporary
art in relation to consumer culture. The creation of his work
is entirely in situ and is grounded in his belief that
the gallery space is in direct conflict with the spaces where
art is normally created and conceived. In order to dissolve these
boundaries he creates work in the place where it will be exhibited.
This act ensures that the audience will experience the work in
the purest form while still existing within the confines of the
white cube.
