Smith Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Jennifer Smith Rogers

Smith Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, A Closer Look, featuring new works by Jennifer Smith Rogers, on view from Nov. 4 - 18, 2011. A reception will be held on Nov. 4, from 5:30-8:30pm, which will coincide with the Charleston Fine Art Dealer’s Association’s (CFADA) Fine Art Annual..

Smith Rogers is known for her paintings of Charleston’s beloved red rooftops, street scenes and nocturnal cityscapes. She captures the city as well as the surrounding beaches and marshlands with vivid color.

For this exhibit Smith Rogers decided to focus intently, and has painted a group of paintings that reflect a more intimate connection with her subject. A Closer Look is an exhibit that explores the finer details of Charleston’s architecture and life in the Lowcountry. The paintings exemplify what makes the area such a charming and unique place. A docked shrimp boat glows in the water in the night’s light and the azalea blossoms in the churchyard of the French Huguenot Church bursting through the wrought iron fence.

Smith Rogers says “I decided to get more intimate with my surroundings. Instead of always stepping back and looking at the big picture, I challenged myself to take a closer look.”

In a painting titled Porch Profiles Smith Rogers has captured a row of porches on South Battery, each façade with its unique architectural elements, from the vantage point of a sidewalk close by. The choice in subjects and the intimacy of each painting offers a unique opportunity to see Charleston and the surrounding area through the artist’s eye, focusing in on some aspect of the scenery or landscape that may have been overlooked by the passer-by. And while it would not be hard to be eternally inspired by your surroundings as an artist in Charleston, Smith Rogers captures a unique and intimate sense of place in her paintings. Her love of the area shines through in her brush strokes and her paintings epitomize the distinctive beauty of the place she calls home.

Smith-Killian Fine Art is Charleston’s gallery for contemporary realism and color. The gallery features works by Lowcountry painter Betty Anglin Smith and her triplets, painters Jennifer Smith Rogers and Shannon Smith, and photographer Tripp Smith. Sculptures in bronze by Darrell Davis and works in oil by Kim English are also available. Subject matter ranges from local and European landscapes to architectural works and still life.
