Blue Ridge Arts Center in Seneca, SC, Offers Works by Kent Ambler & Kyle Carpenter

The Blue Ridge Arts Center in Seneca, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Two Fine Folk, featuring works by Kent Ambler and Kyle Carpenter, on view through Dec. 19, 2009. The exhibit includes paintings and woodcut prints, by Ambler, as well as wood-fired pottery by Carpenter, with many items suitable for holiday gift-giving.

Kent Ambler was born in Indiana, about 25 miles east of Chicago. "My earliest memories are of me drawing. There was never a question as to what I would do with my life," says the artist.

Ambler attended Ball State University in Muncie, IN. There he was introduced to printmaking and discovered that he had an innate "feel" for the process of making woodcuts. In 1992, Ambler graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting.

"I spent six years in New Mexico before settling in South Carolina in 2000," says Ambler. "I live on eight acres on Paris Mountain in Greenville, SC. I have a print studio in my home where I spend my days making woodcuts and painting."

In 1996, Kyle Carpenter came to the Asheville, NC, area to get an education. He was schooled in Fine Arts at The University of North Carolina at Asheville, with a concentration in ceramics. He graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramic Arts. Carpenter has since made my home and studio here and started a family.

"As a studio potter, I work diligently to make well-crafted wares for everyday people," says Carpenter. "It's seemingly less about the 'ritual of the table' and more about respecting a long tradition of craftsmen before me and discovering my own voice. As a contemporary potter, I often look to past traditions for inspiration. I'm interested in folk pottery of many origins. My native state of North Carolina, of course, offers a deep well of talented potters, both folk and contemporary, to look towards for inspiration."
