Artspace in
Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Daniel Allegrucci, Marie Cordella,
and Megan Sullivan
Artspace in Raleigh, NC, is presenting several new exhibits including: Two Rivers, featuring works by Daniel Allegrucci, on view from Feb. 6 - 28, 2009, in the Lobby Gallery; Chapter & Verse, featuring works by Marie Cordella, on view from Feb. 6 - 28, 2009, in the Lobby Gallery; and Regional Emerging Artist-in-Residence, featuring Megan Sullivan, working through July 2009 in Studio 106.
Daniel Allegrucci
Daniel Allegrucci's
woodcut prints are inspired by personal thoughts, impressions,
and worries about our "post-9/11 world." He is interested
in the relationship between the experiences of individuals and
the larger history of civilization. This work offers fragments
of a vague narrative and invites viewers to complete or extend
the story and the relationships.
Allegrucci was born in Fayetteville, NC, and earned his BFA in
1998 from UNC-Charlotte and continued his studies at Wichita State
University, KS. In addition to being a fine art printmaker, he
has worked commercially as a flexographic press operator, pre-press
technician, and web designer. He currently lives and works in
Charlotte, NC.
Marie Cordella
Marie Cordella was awarded Artspace's Regional Emerging Artist-in-Residency for July-January 2008-2009. The works featured in Cordella's exhibition were predominantly created during her Artspace residency. The works span two categories: ready-to-wear and costume. The collection displays a highly diversified aesthetic, and a contrast of materials and forms. Displayed in chronological order Cordella believes that the works demonstrate the development over time of her craft and her fine tailoring skills. Each creation is a detailed study of technique, composition, intuition, and the history of fashion.
In 2001, Cordella began her academic study of art at Parson's School of Design in New York City. Early on Cordella concluded that an increase in physical space and nature were cardinal to her education. In response to this conclusion, in 2002 she transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. VCU's emphasis on Bauhaus and Dutch design struck a chord with her admiration for visual contrast, balance, and geometry. In 2004, Cordella came in third-place at the Worn Again Fashion Show, a national cancer benefit competition held that year in Richmond, VA.
In the Fall of 2005, Cordella enrolled at North Carolina State University to pursue a Masters in Industrial Design. Under the sub-heading of "limited edition gallery pieces," she used her access to industrial materials and material manipulation shops to merge fashion design and industrial design. She has been an integral part of Raleigh's downtown design community, having co-produced the first annual FashionSpark Fashion Show, a component of Raleigh's SparkCon Design Conference. She has been included in the conference's juried showcase each subsequent year.
Megan Sullivan
We welcome Megan Sullivan as our new Regional Emerging Artist-in-Residence. Established in January 2000, the Regional Emerging Artist Residency is a program that provides emerging visual artists with time and space to explore their work in a supportive, thriving, artistic environment. The residency includes a private, rent-free studio with 24-hour access. Recipients are selected through a call to artists held twice a year.
Sullivan earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, and her Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI. Her work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions, including locally at Lump Gallery, Flanders 311, the Morning Times Gallery, Visual Art Exchange, and Glance Gallery.
