North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Carol Watkins

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC, will present the exhibit, Interpretations of Nature in Fiber Artto, featuring works by Carol Watkins, on view at Museum's Nature Art Gallery from Feb. 6 through Mar. 1, 2009.

The exhibition is a culmination of several processes including photography, hand dyeing or fabric painting and surface embellishments. Often, the original idea of each piece is inspired by a photograph, which can be printed on the fabric. Liberal use of stitching is apparent on Watkins' quilts and stitcheries that she calls "thread paintings."

Trees, branches, flowers and leaves are common images seen in Watkins' work. Her love for hiking in the wilderness of her Rocky Mountain home provides the inspiration both in large vistas and small details. "I find the pattern of lichen on a rock or bark on a tree as fascinating as a mountain vista and often invite closer study," says Watkins.

Watkins is also a full-time studio artist and teacher and for 30 years was a social worker and psychotherapist focused on healing and strengthening the body-mind-spirit connection. Her expertise in this area also inspires her artwork.

Watkins' enjoyed two artist-in-residencies at the Mesa Verde National Park and the Rocky Mountain National Park, which allowed her to live and work within the parks and gave her opportunities to explore the landscapes and the sustained quiet time to write, sew and contemplate her work. Her artwork is in private and public collections in the United States and Canada including the University of Colorado and Denver University. Watkins has been exhibiting continuously for the last ten years in both invitational and juried exhibitions.
