State Museum in Columbia, SC, Offers Juried Craft Exhibit
The South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, SC, is presenting a selection of winning entries from the 2008 South Carolina Palmetto Hands Fine Craft Exhibition, on display in the Museum's Education Corridor through Feb. 15, 2009.
Organized and presented by the City of North Charleston's Cultural Arts Department, the South Carolina Palmetto Hands Fine Craft Exhibition is a component of the North Charleston Arts Festival held in North Charleston, SC. More than 100 entries were submitted for the exhibition in the categories of clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood, mixed media, 3D mixed media and glass.
This "mini-exhibit"
contains 11 of the final works selected for the travelling show.
Kellie Scott, owner of the well-known RedSky Gallery in Charlotte,
NC, served as juror for the competition. Scott is a board member
of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design in Charlotte and an experienced
judge of art and fine crafts. "When judging the entries,
I was looking to see how the artist used the medium in a new or
different way an artistic point of view, so to speak. Also,
I looked for an artistic vision that is carried through the piece.
It should tell a story," said Scott.
Museum visitors to the Palmetto Hands exhibit will see
a striking display of original handmade pieces selected by Scott
to become part of the South Carolina State Museum's 2008-2009
Traveling Exhibits Program.
"The Palmetto Hands competition accepts both emerging and established artists in all spectrums - everything from jewelry to furniture," explained Lauren Lynn, arts coordinator for the North Charleston Cultural Arts Department.
The fine crafts in the
Palmetto Hands traveling show include curvaceous botanical
vases by Brooke Cassady that were hand-carved and thrown on a
potter's wheel, a whimsical metal character piece entitled New
Blue Shirt created by Mike Fowle, Life As I Know It,
a kaleidoscopic fiber quilt work by Judith Heyward and a 3-D mixed
media throne-style chair that artist Dennis Vernon built around
a baseball theme.
"As the only statewide fine craft competition and exhibition,
the Palmetto Hands Fine Craft Exhibition showcases the
spirit and complexity of native South Carolina crafting,"
said Jeff Powley, state museum outreach manager and director of
the Traveling Exhibits Program.
The Traveling Exhibits Program at the State Museum provides museums, art centers, universities and other qualified institutions with high quality, affordable traveling exhibitions that range in size from those that are smaller and South Carolina specific to larger ones designed for major venues.
