Cultural Center in Sumter, SC, Features African Art Collection
The Sumter County Cultural Center in Sumter, SC, is presenting the exhibit, The King Khurhu Collection of African Art, on view at the Patriot Hall Gallery through Feb. 14, 2009.
The King Khurhu Collection of African Art, comprises a wide range of art forms and materials including masks, figural representations, both life size and small, musical instruments, intricate, hand-beaded pieces, and textiles representing many countries in Africa. The work includes contemporary pieces as well as older pieces. Curator David Sanders, a Cultural Commissioner and Director of the Manning Avenue Free Studio working with King Khurhu, owner of the African shop The Oracle in Columbia, SC, where the collection is housed, have assembled a rich variety of artworks from ceremonial pieces, rich in symbolism, to more utilitarian pieces used in everyday life; regardless, each work tells the story of art in Africa.
