Contemporary Art in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Jocelyn Châteauvert
701 Center for Contemporary
Art in Columbia, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Within and
Out, an installation of suspended handmade paper constructions
by Jocelyn Châteauvert, on view through Feb. 28, 2010. The
exhibition will be in the 701 CCA artist-in-residence studio on
the second floor of 701 Whaley Street.
Châteauvert, a jewelrymaker by trade, is also a skilled
papermaker who has been hand making paper for the past 20 years.
Drawing inspiration from the work of Richard Serra's large scale,
often maze-like metal structures, Châteauvert's exhibition
will immediately present visitors with the experience of pathways
into space, light and sound. Châteauvert says she is drawn
to paper because of its very nature - paper is sound absorbing
with an ability to transmit light. Paper is organic and has a
chameleon like quality because it can take on the appearance of
other elements, like stone or bark.
Châteauvert earned an MFA in metalworking and jewelry, with extensive hours in handmade paper and a minor in sculpture, from the University of Iowa. An Iowa native, she taught in London at Middlesex Polytechnic and then established herself as a professional artist in San Francisco. In 1999, Châteauvert settled in Charleston, SC. In 2005, she was awarded the South Carolina Arts Commission highest award of "Craft Fellow." The Smithsonian's American Art Museum's Renwick Gallery recognized her work to be one of four artists represented in the prestigious 2007 Craft Invitational From the Ground Up. She pursues her work full time creating jewelry, lighting, sculpture and installations inspired by her handmade paper.
701 Center for Contemporary Art is a non-profit visual arts center that promotes understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of contemporary art, the creative process and the role of art and artists in the community. The center also encourages interaction between visual and other art forms.
