City Art Gallery
in Columbia, SC, Offers Works by Claire K. Farrell
City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, will present the exhibit, New Works, featuring works by Columbia artist Claire K. Farrell, on view from Feb. 25 through Mar. 27, 2010.
Farrell is a versatile
artist who works in a variety of media. She holds degrees from
Duke University and the University of South Carolina. Additionally
she had studied printmaking at Santa Raparata Art School in Florence,
Italy and at Penland School of Art in North Carolina.
Included in this exhibition are Farrell's most recent oil paintings
and mixed media monotypes, which focus primarily on the human
figure as subject matter. She says, "I love to paint or draw
the figure from a live model. I have this opportunity at weekly
drawing sessions at the Columbia Museum of Art's About Face group.
My sessions at About Face were originally intended to build my
skills, but now I use those sessions to gather material to use
in paintings and monotypes."
Farrell's unique mixed
media prints incorporate a wide variety of unique printmaking
techniques, including digital images, photo etchings, stencils,
collage, chine colle, hand drawings and collage. The artist says,
"I am able to convert my drawings and paintings, through
digital technology, into small photo etchings, which I incorporate
into my monotypes. This has given me more variety and opportunity
for experimentation in my monotypes, making them a type of mixed
media print."
Farrell's work is included in private and public collections nation-wide
and she has been accepted in numerous juried exhibition. Most
recently she was winner of "Best in Show" at the South
Carolina Watermedia Society's 2009 Exhibition, and a First Place
prize in printmaking at the SC State Fair. Additionally she was
chosen to paint the image for the official poster of the 2010
SC Book Festival that coincides with her exhibit at City Art Gallery.
