701 Center for
Contemporary Art in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Ellen Kochansky
The 701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia, SC, is presenting an installation entitled, Embedded Energy, by textile artist Ellen Kochansky. The exhibit will be on view through Apr. 5, 2009.
Kochansky is the Artist in Residence at 701 CCA. The theme of her current work centers on memories related to architecture, particularly the 701 Whaley Street building itself, built in 1903, in which she is the first actual resident since its recent restoration. She has crafted a chronicle of ten transparent panels that are 9' x 5' x 4' and five bales that are 3' x 4' x 3' made from mementos of her stay and historical materials from the community related to both Olympia and the 701 Whaley building.
Using the metaphor of quilting, Kochansky has made art of things commonly discarded. Believing that the need for resourcefulness has never been more vital, Kochansky celebrates botanical and human debris - what she refers to as "Cultural Compost". Fallen leaves from local trees, partially decomposed textiles, aging paper with typefaces alluding to another century, lace, photographs and old letters will combine in a work that applauds history and memorializes the neighbors whose energy and ancestors still populate the neighborhood.
A closing performance
of original music by Nathan Koci and the New Music Collective
of Charleston and New York will also feature original choreography
by Martha Brim, performed by Columbia's dance troupe The Power
Company.
701 Center for Contemporary Art (CCA) is a non-profit visual arts
center that promotes understanding, appreciation and enjoyment
of contemporary art, the creative process and the role of art
and artists in the community. The center also encourages interaction
between visual arts and other art forms.
