Holtzclaw
Providence Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibit, Southern Memoirs, an exhibition of original oil and acrylic on canvas paintings by Robert Brown and Paula Holtzclaw. The show will be on view from Mar. 6 - 31, 2009.
Plein air painter Robert Brown will present a new body of urban and rural landscape scenes painted on location in the North Carolina and Virginia piedmont, including familiar areas in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus Counties.
Originally from Anderson, SC, Brown began taking private art lessons when he was seven years old. As an adult, he received formal training at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia. He concentrated on landscape painting, studying privately with painter Lou Sloan, a former teacher at the academy.
Brown uses his landscapes to visually document the constantly changing details of "the landscape we live in". Focusing on the subtle, yet significant changes in light, season, and weather, through his compositions Brown deftly captures the nuances of each scene. His work is included in many prominent private and public collections.
Paula Holtzclaw has spent the last decade carefully developing her distinct style of realism. Her seascapes of the United States' East Coast have garnered her critical acclaim. Her depictions of the Charleston, SC, area are particularly popular. Holtzclaw has received numerous awards and honors including recognition from American Women Artists and Oil Painters of America. Two of her paintings are included in the permanent collection of the Coos Art Museum in Coos Bay, MI.
Holtzclaw's paintings are included in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the nation; her work has been featured in publications including: The Charlotte Observer, Charlotte Place Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine and American Artist Online. She has won awards and competitions including: Bosque Conservatory's 23rd Annual National Art Show, American Women Artists: 2007 National Juried Competition, 2007 American Artist's: 70th Anniversary Semi-Finalist, National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Society, "Best of America" 2007, 17th Annual National Juried Exhibit.
