Siskate Gallery
in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Ashlynn Browning
Siskate Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibit, building/burning/growing, featuring works by Ashlynn Browning, on view through Mar. 31, 2009.
Browning offered the following statement about her work. "The title for this new body of work emerges both from its subject matter and from the many recent changes in my approach to art making. Adding oil to my media, working on the floor as opposed to the wall, and on panel versus paper are just a few of these changes. Additionally, I feel that my personal theories about art making have grown and expanded significantly in the past year. While my love for intuitive mark making persists, I've found that this approach is enriched by layering and working back into images repeatedly to obtain desired results."
"This has been an empowering discovery for me and one which more effectively balances structure and accident, restraint and recklessness, deliberation and instinct," adds Browning. "The subject matter of these new pieces is highly organic. Imagery referencing vines, roots, fire and figures, teems with energy and tension. There is a sense of being enveloped by these forces. The grid shape in my work of the last two years continues to emerge, though now it appears to break down, rebuild, and reinvent itself into a looser and more sensual form. As always, the impetus for my work is a mix of autobiography and exploring the very process of painting. With these two driving forces behind me, I make images that teach me about myself, my place in the world, and about the possibilities of paint."
Browning is a mixed media artist whose work centers on line and its ability to convey emotional information. She is a 2002 recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant and has exhibited at New York's CUE Foundation and Lincoln Center. Other recent exhibitions include Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, NC, Fayetteville Art Museum, Fayetteville, NC, Lee Hansley Gallery, Raleigh, NC, Barbara Archer Gallery, Atlanta, GA, The Helm Gallery, Tacoma, WA, Atkinson Gallery, Southport, UK and Hallway Bathroom Gallery, San Francisco, CA.
Browning has received grants from the Vermont Studio Center, the United Arts Council, and the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. The artist lives in Raleigh, NC, where her work is represented by Flanders Art Gallery.
