Upstairs Artspace
in Tryon, NC, Observes Black Experiences with Exhibitions
The Upstairs Artspace, Tryon, NC, opens its 2009 season with The Hannon Barbershop Project, an installation by Kipp McIntyre and Logan B. Hannon that celebrates a special gathering place in one of Tryon's historic African-American neighborhoods. Using artifacts, visual art and craft, and barbershop-related activities, McIntyre and Hannon hope to generate public dialogue about community issues of commerce, culture, social change and values. An installation highlight is a display of dolls crafted by the neighborhood women from found or discarded materials.
A second exhibit is This New Day: Black Artists from Upstate to Mountain, featuring work by Erica Harper, painting, Mary Harris, Joshua Jackson, Mike Smith, drawing, Winston Wingo, painting and sculpture, all from Spartanburg, SC; and Carola Jones, mixed media, Sylva, NC. Marie T. Cochran and Victoria Casey-McDonald, Sylva, NC, collaborate on a site-specific installation, love/loss/love, about enduring lessons of struggle and resilience in Afrilachian culture.
Both exhibitions will be on view through Apr. 11, 2009.
