Cameron Art
Museum in Wilmington, NC, Features Quilts and Works by Amalia
Amaki, Lillian Blades and Beverly Buchanan
The Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Recollection: The Past is Present, which brings together a collection of handmade quilts from the Mississippi Museum of Art and the work of three female artists: Amalia Amaki, Lillian Blades and Beverly Buchanan, all on view through June 20, 2010. The exhibition was organized by the Cameron Art Museum.
The artists' use of textural materials, color, found objects, building shapes and cultural images balance delicacy and strength while evoking the individualized stories and shared histories of the diaspora of African Americans, Africa and the Caribbean. Beverly Buchanan's work includes miniature churches, houses and shack sculptures. Some are quite colorful while others are starkly devoid of color. Amalia Amaki creates ornate and delicate fans, candy boxes and treasure boxes. Lillian Blades' pieces are large-scale, mosaic-style mixed media wall hangings.
In addition, the artists collectively share an interest in the African American southern experience with each maintaining homes and work studios in Georgia. All of the contemporary work dovetails and resonates with the African American quilts, which are on loan to CAM by the Mississippi Museum of Art from their newly acquired collection for this exhibition. The quilt collection of MMA is part of a body of work done by the quilt collective Mississippi Cultural Crossroads which remains active.
Related public programs and a gallery guide will accompany the exhibition. This project received support from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the NC Department of Cultural Resources.
