March Issue 2010
City of Charleston
Features Works by James Innes, Kristi Ryba, and Daphne vom Baur
The City of Charleston will present the exhibit, Untold Stories, an exhibit of figurative paintings by artists James Innes, Kristi Ryba, and Daphne vom Baur, on view at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park in Charleston, SC, from Mar. 12 through Apr. 25, 2010. The exhibit is being curated by Mary Walker and sponsored by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs.
Untold Stories features the work of three contemporary figure painters, James Innes, Kristi Ryba and Daphne vom Baur, who present their distinct viewpoints and creative processes through figurative works, while allowing the viewer to explore their stories and experiences. Mary Walker stated, "What attracted me to these artists and compelled me to develop this exhibition is my love for narrative art."
James Innes
Born in New York in 1929, James Innes received a BFA and, a short time later, an MFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. He went on to teach and create art, subsequently moving to South Carolina in 1990, where he lived until his death in 2009. During his entire artistic career, Innes considered himself to be a figurative painter. The paintings represented in Untold Stories are largely inspired by Innes' travels to Mexico and Italy throughout the 1970s and 1980s, where he became fascinated with religious and ceremonial imagery related to San Miguel and his own Catholic upbringing.
Kristi Ryba
Kristi Ryba holds a BA degree from the College of Charleston and an MFA from Vermont College. A multi-media painter, Ryba examines family life as well as women's roles in her art. She works from old photographs to create figurative paintings and manuscripts. Ryba is also influenced by her personal experiences and family life. She has lived in California, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, but currently resides in the Charleston area.
Daphne vom Baur
The work of Daphne vom Baur in Untold Stories is inspired by mythology, art history, and her life experiences. She holds a BFA from Boston University. Working formally and intuitively with drawing and color, vom Baur sometimes uses her family as figure models as she paints her own interpretations of imaginative worlds or ancient epics like the Odyssey. She currently works and lives in Virginia.
Artist lectures will be held on the following Saturdays (all are admission-free): Daphne vom Baur: Mar. 13, 2010, at 3pm; Joanna Innes and Roberta Sokolitz for James Innes: Mar. 20, 2010, at 3pm; and Kristi Ryba: Mar. 27, 2010, at 3pm.
