March Issue 2010
Jerald Melberg
Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Harold Shapinsky &
Charles White
Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting two exhibitions including: Harold Shapinsky and The Charles White Sketchbook, both on view through Apr. 10, 2010.
Harold Shapinsky
Harold Shapinsky (1925-2004) remained largely unappreciated and unknown until late in his life. His work came into public consciousness in the mid 1980's solely because of the efforts of an Indian teacher and art lover, Akumal Ramachander, who was convinced of Shapinsky's genius. He brought the artist's work to the attention of the Tate Museum, which helped arrange his first solo exhibition at the Mayor Gallery in London. After receiving stellar reviews from that exhibition, the artist began exhibiting regularly in Europe and the United States, and is now considered to be a major contributor to the abstract expressionist movement. Exhibiting for the first time at the gallery, Shapinsky's works communicate an energy and intensity that transcends their intimate scale.
Charles White
Charles White (1918-1979), an artist recognized for his extraordinary draftsmanship, dedicated his life and work to examining the histories and strengths of African-American culture. This particular group of drawings and watercolors are being exhibited for the first time. Although primarily studies for larger works, they poignantly demonstrate the artist's drawing skills as well as his devotion to working on paper. During his long and active career, White produced etchings, lithographs, drawings, paintings and murals. His works are included in more than fifty major museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
