March Issue 2010
Nina Liu and
Friends in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Gertrude Simon
Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, presents Retrospective, a special exhibition of handmade paper by distinguished Charleston papermaker Gertrude Simon, on view from Mar. 5 - 31, 2010. Simon is closing her studio, and this exhibition will focus on highlights from her artistic career.
Simon often incorporates
wood, metal and found objects into her work. The work attracts
viewers with a range of colors and tactile surfaces that invite
close scrutiny. Some of Simon's work refers to the architecture
of the past. Other pieces are almost playful, but in every instance
Simon is serious about her art.
Simon has taught papermaking to both teachers and students through
the auspices of the South Carolina Arts Commission, and she has
been a faculty member for the Gibbes Museum of Art. Her work is
in several corporate and private collections. Among them are International
Paper Company, Calvin Klein Fragrances, New Jersey Bell, and the
Free Library of Philadelphia.
Simon has been the recipient
of numerous awards, including a purchase award from the Museum
of York County in South Carolina, and agencies such as the New
Jersey State Council on the Arts and the Charleston Area Arts
Council have recognized and supported her work through several
grants.
Throughout her career Simon has been active in exhibiting her
work in solo and group exhibitions. In South Carolina her pieces
have been in several Piccolo Spoleto Festival juried exhibitions,
South Carolina Crafts Association exhibitions, and in many public
and private galleries. Simon has exhibited her work outside the
state in places as varied as Winston-Salem, NC; Iowa City, IA;
and Beer Sheva, Israel. Her work was part of an exhibition at
the opening ceremonies of the ill-fated World Trade Center, and
Tiffany & Company has included her work in a special display
in its Fifth Avenue windows.
