Furman University in Greenville, SC, Features Works by Terri Bright

Furman University in Greenville, SC, is presenting Beautiful Ruins, featuring photographs by Furman University Associate Professor of Art Terri Bright, on view in the Thompson Gallery of the Roe Art Building, through Mar. 7, 2014.

In the exhibition Bright looks to familiar objects and formal structures to describe her relationship to things within and around her. She photographs ordinary subjects and non-monumental spaces that “possess a kind of wilted beauty – bridges to nowhere, stained museum walls that compete with the displayed art, a still-life comprised of indispensable toiletries, a ripe watermelon that’s fallen from grace, and flowers and plants both real and plastic – that bring vitality to an otherwise unremarkable scene.”

Bright has had solo exhibitions at venues including the Abrons Art Center in New York, The Society for Contemporary Photography in Kansas City, Washington University School of Art in St. Louis, the University of California, Berkeley extension, and the University of Alabama. She has been a part of numerous group exhibitions that have been juried by individuals such as Anne Wilkes Tucker, Rod Slemmons, Ellen Handy, Kathleen Ewing, Catherine Ware, Howard Greenberg and Chan Chao.

Bright received her MFA from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999 where she studied with Mark Goodman, Lawrence McFarland, and Kate Breakey. She joined the Furman faculty in 1999 where she teaches photography and drawing.
