Spring in Columbia,
SC, Means Artista Vista - April 23 - 25, 2009
Artista Vista is Columbia, SC's, signature gallery crawl and the largest visual arts event in the Midlands, connecting visitors with artists from approximately 12 hallmark galleries. The three-day event, which is free and open to the public, lets visitors mingle among works and artists from around the world with complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres.
The Congaree Vista is located in and around the Gervais Street corridor, between the Congaree River and Assembly street.
The 18th annual Artista Vista begins this year on Apr. 23, 2009, from 4pm to 9pm with a gallery crawl. The event continues Apr. 24 from 10am-6pm and Apr. 25, from 11am-3pm.
Gallery participants and artists are still being finalized, but the following are confirmed: City Art Gallery, Vista Studios/Gallery 80808, The Gallery at DuPRE, Carol Saunders Gallery, if Art, Lewis+Clark, The Gallery at Nonnah's, South Carolina State Museum, One Eared Cow Glass, Wink Gallery, Watermark Hypnosis and Serenity Gallery, and the CMFA's Artspace at the Columbia Music Festival Association.
Select artists will be available during the event to answer questions and comment on their work, while others will provide live demonstrations.
A lineup of some of the scheduled offerings include: Perceptual Painters: The Collective, opens Apr. 23, 2009, at City Art Gallery. The show will feature works by oil painters Dave Campbell, Matt Klos, John Lee, Aaron Lubrick, Scott Noel, Brian Rego, and Andrew Patterson-Tutschka. The artists are connected through their affiliation with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as well as their use of light and subject. The exhibit will continue through June 27, 2009. City Art also represents regional artists of all mediums. Separated into three distinct galleries, City Art houses paintings, pottery, metalwork, glass, jewelry, photography, sculpture, lithographs, gourd art, mixed media, porcelain, woodwork, encaustic, etchings and more. View from the Studios, opens on Apr. 23, 2009, at Gallery 80808/Vista Studios. The exhibit, which continues through May 12, 2009, proves that 13 artists equal as many unique perspectives, and 13 open studios offer visitors as many opportunities for lively exchanges with the resident artists. Participating artists include: Susan Lenz, Stephen Chesley, Don Zurlo, Robert Kennedy, Laura Spong, Pat Gilmartin, Sharon Collings Licata, Pat Callahan, Ethel Brody, David Yaghjian, Michel McNinch, Heidi Darr Hope, and Jeff Donovan. New Directions will be offered at The Gallery at DuPRE, for the Artista Vista event. The exhibit will reintroduce the gallery to the public, as the gallery is now concentrating on the art of a limited number of artists who are impacting the state and beyond with their original works of art. Symbology, featuring fine art photography by Brett Flashnick will be on view at the CMFA's Artspace at the Columbia Music Festival Association, from Apr. 23 - 25, 2009. Working as an award winning photojournalist for the past decade, Flashnick has taken this opportunity to delve into a new world of fine art photography by exploring concepts of symbols, cultural identity, and expressions of patriotism, faith, love, and even socioeconomic status. Robert Courtright: Collages, Collage Constructions and Masks 1953-2008, is being offered in the Lipscomb Gallery at the SC State Museum through Aug. 23, 2009. The State Museum will also offer the Congaree Art Festival on Sat. , Apr. 24, just outside the entrance to the Museum, starting at 10am.
Paintings by Elizabeth Foster will be offered at Carol Saunders Gallery during Artista Vista. Foster, is a painter and singer-songwriter. She has been concentrating on bird imagery, and their historical portrayal as carriers of hope and burden, emblems of victory and despair, as well as promise and spirit. The Gallery at Nonnah's will present works by Edie Biddle, Ingrid Carson, Jun Fleetwood, Bonnie Goldberg, Alicia Leeke, Betty Mandell, Marcia Murray, and Michel McNinety during Artisa Vista. And, finally, but always a favorite, Tommy Lockart and Mark Woodham of One Eared Cow Glass will give demonstrations of glass blowing during the Artisa Vista event.
