Gallery in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by Colleen Webster
The
Crescent Gallery in Spartanburg, SC, will present the exhibit,
Many Place, featuring works by Colleen Webster of Asheville,
NC, on view from Apr. 16 through May 19, 2009.
This will be Webster's first show in Spartanburg, though her works have been greatly sought after by the community since The Crescent Gallery opened in Sept. 2008. The exhibit will feature 15-20 oil paintings of the places that have inspired her around the Upstate as well as in Western North Carolina.
Webster was born in upstate New York. Her family recognized and encouraged her artistic abilities at a young age. In 1996, Webster, then a purely studio painter, relocated to Asheville. She began working exclusively in oil and en plein air. Her paintings reveal the effects of natural light while conveying true color, value and mood of the subject. Painting en plein air requires leaving the safety of a controlled studio environment for painting directly from life outdoors. Embracing the challenge of a quickened technique, since outdoor light is elusive and conditions unpredictable are part of the process that inspires her work.
In Webster's own words, "Once I took my easel outdoors I was hooked. Now that I have moved in this direction, I can't go back. The mountains here and natural beauty outdoors inspire me to get out there and be intimate with nature. My paintings are a reflection of that experience."
When Webster is not painting, she is restoring paintings of those that have come before her. She has been an assistant to a painting conservator for many years working on oil paintings of the past and ones that have been damaged. Such paintings include art from the Johnson Collection.
