The Sylvan Gallery
in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Joan Potter and Bob Palevitz
The Sylvan Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Still Lifes, featuring works by Joan Potter and Bob Palevitz as well as other gallery artists in a show highlighting the tradition of "nature morte." The exhibition will be on view from Apr. 3 - 25, 2009.
With its objects illustrating flora and fauna and capturing a "moment of arrangement" these works also portray well the compositional skills of the artist. Still life paintings have a long history and are often the focus of major museum shows. In a manner of speaking they are paintings of nature brought indoors. They are a "moment of arrangement" created by the artist so in actuality it is a doubly composed subject when painted. They also give a peek into the intimate lives of the painters showing favorite collectibles or prize garden accomplishments.
Joan Potter began painting in New York City in 1964, studying at the Art Student's League with David Leffel. By the time she moved to Santa Fe in the mid-1980s she was already considered one of the premier still-life artists in the country.
Robert Palevitz studied at the Art Student's League and School of Visual Arts and has shown his work in New York over the last 20 years and has been featured in American Artist Magazine.
The Sylvan Gallery specializes in 20th and 21st century representational art and carries a large selection of sculpture. They are pleased to represent the work of thirty or so artists of world renown including Rhett Thurman, Glenna Goodacre, Guido Petruzzi, Scott Burdick, Shirley Novak, Ted Ellis, Susan Lyon and Nancy Bush.
The gallery is a member of the Charleston Fine Art Dealers' Association (CFADA) and a founding partner of the Charleston Art Auction.
