Education Graduates
The Curtis R. Harley Art Gallery at the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, SC, is pleased to present an exhibition by the 2009 class in the undergraduate art education program. This is the first graduating class of the art education program since it was approved by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. The exhibition entitled, You Are What You See: Inquiries in Art Education, will be on display from Apr. 6 through May 1, 2009.
McKensie Hall
"Five seniors will present a wide variety of work that demonstrate skills as an artist and artist as educator," said Jane Nodine, professor of art and director of the Gallery at USC Upstate. "Works will encompass a variety of media and will include examples of teaching plans and projects from their experiences as pre-service teachers in the schools."
The students who will be exhibiting their work include McKensie Hall, a senior from Campobello, SC; Charlotte Kerr a senior from Gaffney, SC; Mallory Long a senior from Wellford, SC; Bridget Rochette a senior from Greer, SC; and Samantha Spradley a senior from Fayetteville, GA.
USC Upstate offers a
bachelor's degree in art education that leads to initial certification
for teaching art in K-12 schools. Students who enroll in the program
are exposed to concepts, theories and skills necessary to become
successful educators. They also experience diverse populations
of students, develop e-portfolios, participate in experiential
learning in and outside of the classroom, and complete over 100
hours of practical experience in public schools located in the
Upstate region. Art education majors also participate in the Focus
Education Gallery activities , located on the second floor of
the USC Upstate Performing Arts Center, that feature scheduled
exhibition of work by K-12 students in Upstate schools.
"This practical preparation of qualified individuals is designed
to provide graduates experiences in studio, art history, educational
theories, and dispositions that will prepare them as effective
teachers," said Nodine.
