STARworks in Star, NC, Offers 2014 FireFest - May 2 - 4, 2014

STARworks in Star, NC, will offer the 2014 FireFest, a three-day celebration of the role of fire in the creation of art - May 2-4, 2014.

FireFest features glass, ceramics and metal, all of which incorporate fire to create art. Special guests ceramic artist Cristina Córdova and glass artist Ché Rhodes will create art, hold slide shows and participate in finale events involving fire.

Córdova was selected for “40 Under 40: Craft Futures” at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 2012. Rhodes is an associate professor and head of Studio Glass at the University of Louisville, Allen R. Hite Art Institute in Kentucky.

FireFest activities include workshops, demonstrations and slide shows in glass, metal and ceramics, special finale events involving fire, including an iron pour and a large ceramic sculpture firing and more.

STARworks Open Studios will be held Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. Open Studios will give visitors the opportunity to try working with hot glass, metal or clay. Food and locally brewed beer will be available on site. An art sale featuring work by several local artists will be held in the STARworks Gallery throughout the event.

Friday night’s opening ceremonies include live music, a fire tornado and a hot glass magic show. Saturday will be filled with workshops, slide shows and special finale events. Sunday events include a Thor and Jennifer Bueno hot glass presentation, “Message in a Bottle,” which is guaranteed to be entertaining for children and adults.

Daily admission is $5 and a weekend pass is $10. Admission includes finale events, demonstrations, slide presentations and a ceramics workshop with Cristina Córdova on Sunday. Open Studios is free to watch and costs $10 to participate. Hands-on workshops will be an additional charge and require advance registration.
