City of Charleston
(SC) Features Works by Dorothy Netherland, Jonathan Brilliant,
Ben Timpson, Karin Olah and Ishmael
Five of Charleston's contemporary artists will showcase together their works during the Piccolo Spoleto Festival and beyond, May 15 through July 26, 2009, at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park in Charleston, SC. From painted glass to burned mediums and collage paintings to miniature compositions, the individual works of Dorothy Netherland, Jonathan Brilliant, Ben Timpson, Karin Olah and Ishmael create the collective exhibit, Contemporary Charleston 2009: Revelation of Process.
"This wonderful concept is the brainchild of our Gallery coordinator, Erin Glaze. We are extremely impressed with her curatorial skills," says Ellen Dressler Moryl, Director of the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs. "I feel that her thoughtful approach has revealed each individual artist's vision, with the final result serving as a true inspiration to others to make art and push the limits of their creative process."
Dorothy Netherland paints in reverse on multiple, stacked panes of glass and uses vintage women's magazines as her source material, incorporating hand-drawn and screen printed imagery.
Jonathan Brilliant's work fuses patterning and mark-making with pre- and post-consumer manufactured materials through methods, including but not limited to weaving, welding, stacking, arranging, mold-making and creating.
Ben Timpson assembles miniature compositions on slide film at a light table that are sometimes viewed through magnifying lenses. He then enlarges the compositions using photographic techniques.
Karin Olah creates collage paintings with pasted textiles that are combined with gouache, acrylic and graphite to create works that are deep in color and texture.
Ishmael taps into his
knowledge of graffiti techniques to produce works on canvas that
capture unique effects by burning and manipulating his medium
- spray paint.
All the artists in the exhibit will also present lectures and
demonstrations on the following dates, times to be announced:
Ishmael, June 13; Timpson, June 20; Olah, June 27; Netherland,
July 11; and Brilliant, July 18, 2009.
