Hodges Taylor
Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by David Halliday and
Kevin Kennedy
Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting its Spring Exhibition featuring David Halliday's photography and Kevin Kennedy's sculpture, on view through May 31, 2009.
David Halliday
Working in the traditional genre of still-life photography, David Halliday is well-known for his sepia-toned silver prints. His latest body of color work maintains the same intimate and simple beauty, while creating a more visceral connection for the viewer. The rich colors and sensual textures seem embodied by the scent and nature of the items he selects.
Shot during 2007 in various locations from his home in New Orleans to Nantucket, as well as Italy and Greece, the artist's attention to detail and composition, combined with meticulous printing remind us of the basic pleasures in perceived happenstance
Kevin Kennedy
A Louisiana native, Kevin Kennedy is an award-winning sculptor and photographer. His work has received recognition through various grants as well as numerous solo exhibitions of both his photographs and sculpture is such places as Arkansas State University Art Galleries, Galerie Simonne Stern in New Orleans, and I-Space in Chicago.
"The objects I create mirror my own history," says Kennedy. I work from the familiar, what is drawn from my very center. It is difficult to say if my practice is therapy or distraction. I like to busy myself, letting my hands occupy my mind, or my mind occupy my hands. In many instances, my work evolves through error. I find myself tearing works apart and rebuilding them, often working on several pieces at once. This way of working reflects how I've lived my life. I perpetually sought change, unknown places and the freedom of motion. Along the way, the motion that occupied my hands and mind gave me freedom. The finished object washes that away. Yet, I recognize that the completed object holds a bit of truth, a lesson. And the reason for beginning is the reason for end."
